When we were small kids we all must have gone to many weddings where in the Phera ceremony (Sacred Vows of Hindu Marriage) we must have seen brides and grooms circling around pious Agni seven times and a pundit pronouncing some mantras, about which we were totally unknown what he was pronouncing and what was the meaning of them. And one of the main questions that always erupted in our minds was that why they were circling around the pious Agni seven times.

And still, we are until or unless we get married and a pundit tells us the meaning and significance of all those Hindu wedding mantras and significance of Saath Pheras according to Hindu marriage traditions. What is the significance of Saath Pheras and what is the importance of the Sanskrit mantras that are pronounced during the Phera ceremony?(Sacred Vows of Hindu Marriage) We are going to tell you all about them.

The Sanskrit mantras are pronounced because it is considered direct blessings from Gods. It is also because the language is considered the language of God. And it has been for eons these mantras are pronounced. Hindu wedding Saath Pheras are immensely important because if they are not done, a wedding is not considered a wedding. And every phera holds a value, a promise, for which a bride and a groom should abide by.

So when the time of your wedding comes and a pundit is going to tell you the importance every phera, how surprising it would be for him if you tell the significance of all these pheras beforehand.

The significance of Hindu marriage’s Saath Pheras:

1 Phera

"Is Phere Main Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Aap Kabhi Tirth Yatra Karne Jaaye to Mujhe Bhi Apne Saath Lekar Jaaye. Aur Kuch Vrat (fast) ya Dharmik Karm Kare to Usme Mujhe Bhi Shamil Kare. Agar Ise Aap Swikar Karte Hain to Main Aapke Paas Aana Swikaar Karti Hoon."

2 Phera

"Dusre Vachan Main Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Jaise Aap Apne Mata Peeta Ka Samman Karte Hain, Waise Hi Mere Maata Peeta Ka Bhi Kare. Aur Parivar Ki Maryada Banaye Rakhe Aur Dharm Anusthan Karte Hue Bhagvaan Ke Bhakt Bane Rahe Hain. Agar Ise Aap Maante Hain to Main Aapke Paas Ana Swikar Karti Hoon."

In this second phera, bride says to groom that as you honor your parents, you should honor mine. And according to family’s principles should do religious work becoming a devotee of God. If you admit to this, I come to you.

3 Phera

"Thisre Vachan Main Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Aap Mujhe Jeevan Ki Teeno Avasthayo Main Mera Palan Karte Rahege. Agar Aap Ise Swikar Karte Hain to Main Aapke Paas Aana Swikar Karti Hoon."

In this third Phera bride says to groom that you should be honoring me in all the three stages of age as; Youth, Mature and Old. If you submit to this, then I come to you.

4 Phera

"Chote Phere Main Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Aane Wale Samay Main Parivar Ki Puri Jimmedari Aapki Hain. Agar Aap is Jimmedari Ko Pura Karna Swikar Karte Hain, to Main Aapke Paas Aana Swikar Karti Hoon."

"Panchve Phere Main Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Apne Ghar Ke Karyo, Jaise Vivah, Lain-Dain Aur Kisi Aur Karyo Ke Liye Paise Kharch Karte Samay Aap Meri Raay Leve to Main Aapke Paas Aana Swikar Karti Hoon."

In this fifth phera, bride says to groom for her involvement in financial matters if he thinks so whether in the works of weddings, functions or any other works. If he admits to this then I admit to come to you.

6 Phera

"Chatve Phere Main, Kanya Var Se Kehti Hain Ki Agar Main Apni Saheliyo Ya Anya Mahilayo Ke Saath Main Baithi Hoon to Aap Bina Kisi Karan Mera Apmaan Nahi Karege. Aur Aap Jua Aur kisi Bhi Prakar Ki Bhuraiyo Se Apne Aap Ko Door Rakhege. Agar Aap Aisa Karte Hain to Main Aana Swikar Karti Hoon."
