The custom of wearing Sindoor on forehead in the parting of hair by married Hindu women is considered auspicious and is being carried as a very important part in our culture, since centuries. Scholars say that according to mythology, red color is the symbol of power & vermilion/sindoor is a symbol of the female energy of Mata Parvati/Sati.
According to our holy scriptures, people regard Sati as the ideal wife of Lord Shiva, who sacrificed her life to uphold her husband's honor. Every Hindu wife represents Shakti or Sati. When elders bless a married woman, they often say Akhand Saubhagyavati Bhava, meaning they wish her a lifelong marriage and protection from the sorrow of widowhood. Devotees believe that Goddess Parvati protects the husbands of all married women who wear sindoor and shields them from evil spirits.
According to Hindu astrology, astrologers believe that the House of Aries or Mesha Rashi lies on every person’s forehead. Mars, the ruling planet of Aries, is associated with the color red, which people consider auspicious. This belief explains why married women apply red sindoor on the forehead and at the hair partition. Both practices are seen as signs of Saubhagya (good luck). Similarly, people regard sindoor as a symbol of the female energy of Shakti.

According to legends, Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, wore sindoor on her forehead as a symbol of her devotion and love for her husband. Devotees believe that Lord Shiva holds sindoor very dear, and women who apply it to their foreheads receive the blessing of a long and blissful married life. The groom places sindoor on the bride’s forehead as a blessing, which people believe brings good luck and prosperity to the couple and protects them from malevolent spirits. Therefore, sindoor is not only a symbol of love and devotion but it is also a source of security and blessings for the newlywed couple.
In modern times, women adore Sindoor in many different ways and whatever shapes they like. Some apply it in the partitioning their hair on the side & they bling it with a small crystal of diamond on the sindoor and some women prefer not to wear it at all. They believe it to be an ornamental mark of marriage but others completely disagree to the importance of sindoor as it is the response to the patriarchal society. Sometimes, society criticizes women who choose not to wear sindoor and fails to appreciate their personal choices. For then as a humble wife it is their duty to put sindoor on forhead.
Most women in the 21st century do not believe in the practice of applying sindoor after marriage. Feminist movements have significantly influenced women’s perspectives on their bodies and cultural traditions, leading to this shift in belief. Sindoor became a central point of debate—on one side stood traditionalists trying to reinforce cultural beliefs, and on the other stood modern women determined to challenge patriarchal norms at all costs.
Sindoor enhances feminine grace to a large extent and provides divine beauty. People also recognize red as the color of love and passion. That is why they say Indian women apply it to win their husbands’ hearts. Sindoor signifies a woman's married status, and her husband offers her protection. Therefore, people should not cast an evil eye on her. Also, red is the color of fire, blood, and strength. It conveys that people should never consider women weak. They should respect women as Shakti, the goddess of strength. A woman can be the spark of fire or a soft flower by her own will to protect herself as well as her motherland.
It is true that over time, society has gradually lost sight of the importance of sindoor. When a progressive woman wears sindoor today, people often label her as overly conservative. But in recent times, we have noticed that women have been recreating uses and colors of Sindoor in many concepts, just to prove that is not a dated concept but something that is evolving constantly.
