The Entwined Rituals of Wedding and Ganesh Puja

The wedding begins with the procession or Baraat, where Groom with his friends and family arrives at the wedding venue. After Baraat, the Groom enters the Mandap to settle before the wedding rituals begin. Here the Priest, also known as Pandit solicits the blessings of Lord Ganesh, to remove all hitches, as a herald to the nuptials which are about to take place. This sacrament, or the rituals, is performed for good fortune to be bestowed onto the married couple and their families, so that whatever obstacles they may face will be destroyed. Hence, Lord Ganesh is also popularly known as Vighna Vinaashak.

Ganesh Pooja Significance On Ganesha Chaturthi

The birth of the elephant headed God Ganesh is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi. It is a ten-day festival which begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.

The festival begins with bringing an idol of Ganesh home and placing it on a raised platform. The entire set up is decorated lavishly. The worship starts with invoking life in the idol also known as the pranapratishtha. This is followed by Shhodashopachra or paying tribute in 16 different ways. The mantras are chanted from the Ganesh Upanishads and coconut jaggery and 21 modaks are offered.

One interesting fact of this festival is that the idol brought home is finally immersed in local rivers or sea after a grand procession carried out in the city with drums, dancing and singing marking the end of the festival. Huge idols of Lord Ganesh are taken in a chariot during the procession. This symbolically means, Lord Ganesha returns to his parent’s abode (Shiva and Parvati) in Mount Kailas. This festival is celebrated in an extravagant manner involving huge public sentiments.
